As many of you have already heard, a raze application has been filed with the DC Office of Planning for clearance from the Historic Preservation Office (HPO) to demolish the Capitol Skyline Hotel in Southwest DC.

Built in 1962, this iconic mid-century modern hotel was designed by architect Morris Lapidus. For an in-depth history of the hotel, check out author and historian John DeFerrari's write-up on Substack, titled "Capitol Skyline: A Mid-Century Modern Hotel for the Jet Set in Southwest DC."

As an organization dedicated to increasing public awareness, appreciation, and protection of modern architecture, landscapes, neighborhoods, and sites in Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas in Maryland and Virginia, we are exploring possible avenues for documentation and action.

We have many fond memories of the Capitol Skyline Hotel, including one of our first Docomomo DC member meetings, held there on July 24, 2014.
